The world of athletics witnessed an unprecedented event as a humanoid robot outpaced the human world record in a half-marathon race held in Beijing. This achievement reflects not only China’s technological prowess but also the potential for future applications of robotics in various sectors.

Organized by the Beijing Economic-Technological Development Area, the half-marathon saw humanoid robots racing alongside human participants. The winner, developed by Honor—a Chinese smartphone manufacturer—completed the 21-kilometer race in an astonishing 50 minutes and 26 seconds. This time surpassed the human world record set by Uganda’s Jacob Kiplimo, who clocked in at 57 minutes during a Lisbon road race earlier this year.
The robot’s triumph marks a notable advancement from the previous year’s race, where the leading robot took 2 hours and 40 minutes to complete the course. Despite some technical hiccups, such as one robot falling at the start and another colliding with a barrier, the event highlighted significant progress in robotic technology.
Engineering Marvels and Future Possibilities
Du Xiaodi, Honor’s test development engineer, attributes this success to the robot’s design, inspired by elite human athletes. It features long legs and a powerful liquid-cooling system, primarily developed in-house. Du emphasized that these technological advancements might soon transition into industrial applications, enhancing structural reliability and efficiency.
Approximately 40% of the robots navigated the course autonomously, while the remainder relied on remote control. The winning robot, which used autonomous navigation, secured the victory under the event’s weighted scoring system, despite a separate remotely-controlled robot finishing first in a faster time.

The event captured the attention of spectators, who marveled at the robots’ capabilities. Sun Zhigang, an attendee, expressed amazement at the robots’ performance, noting their superiority over humans in this context as a testament to technological evolution. Another spectator, Wang Wen, suggested that the robots’ speed and performance might herald a new era in athletic competitions.
