The situation was dire, with temperatures shattering records. LaGuardia Airport in New York hit a sweltering 104 degrees Fahrenheit, breaking its old record of 101 degrees from 1966. Newark and Atlantic City in New Jersey weren’t far behind, with temperatures soaring to 105 F and 106 F, respectively.

The Heat Dome’s Impact

This heat dome brought with it a brutal mix of soaring temperatures and high humidity, creating a stifling atmosphere that left many vulnerable residents gasping for relief. Dr. Raynard Washington, New Jersey’s Health Commissioner, pointed out that a significant number of the heat-related deaths occurred in homes without air conditioning. Others weren’t so lucky either—they were found outdoors or in parked cars. The unyielding heat, combined with high nighttime temperatures, added further strain on the body’s ability to recover.

“The heat’s hitting all of us, not just seniors, not just with underlying health conditions, people of all ages,” said Governor Mikie Sherrill.

The misery didn’t end with heat. As the wave moved eastward, severe storms followed, causing widespread power outages. Nearly 900,000 utility customers in the central, eastern, and southern United States suddenly found themselves in the dark, worsening an already dangerous situation. New Jersey and its neighboring states, like Pennsylvania and Michigan, saw utility poles topple, trees split in half, and power lines brought down.
