The Legacy of Lead in Omaha

The roots of Omaha’s lead woes trace back to a lead smelter that once operated in the city. The EPA stepped in during the late ’90s, designating the area a Superfund site. The cleanup standards set in 2009 rely on outdated health guidelines. But newer studies paint a grim picture—showing that even lower lead exposure levels can significantly impact health, leading to IQ loss in children and increased heart attack risks in adults. Still, the EPA’s policy on Omaha’s remediation hasn’t budged, leaving many residents in a tough spot.

“It feels a little bit like being a sitting duck,” said Natalie Thorpe, an Omaha resident whose yard has enough lead to pose a risk yet not enough to qualify for government cleanup.

Current Standards vs. Health Guidelines

The EPA insists on yard remediation when soil holds over 400 parts per million of lead. Yet, this threshold dwarfs the levels recommended by newer health guidelines. According to an EPA risk model, soil levels should dip below 100 parts per million to safeguard most children—a standard calling for a more vigorous cleanup plan.

Tests by the Flatwater Free Press and ProPublica revealed that 1 in 10 homes, even after remediation, still exceeded the EPA’s current threshold. This suggests that existing policies might not provide enough community safety. EPA spokesperson Kellen Ashford pointed out that while soil remediation is crucial, it’s merely one piece of the puzzle in reducing lead risks.

As the EPA continues its work in Omaha, the situation highlights an urgent need for policy reevaluation, considering the evolving scientific landscape.
